Know your own value in a relationship

Know your own value in a relationship

In an ideal love relationship, everyone would treat their partner as 100% equal, in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world. For various reasons, there are some people, both men and women, who feel a sense of superiority towards their partner. In some cases, they feel their role is more significant than their partner's. In other cases, it is simple ignorance. Then there are those who have an unhealthy dose of arrogance or self-importance.

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and, ultimately, your relationship is to know your own value, to feel secure that you are special, unique and important. Your contribution is important, and the gifts and value that you bring to your relationship are significant and irreplaceable.

Sadly, there are many people who buy into their partner's sense of self-importance. Perhaps their partner makes most or all of the family income, so they feel and are treated as a dependant. While a person is fortunate enough to have their material needs met by his or her partner, it's equally true that the "breadwinner" is every bit as fortunate to have many of his or her needs met as well. Often, it's the non-breadwinner, behind the scenes, who makes it possible and convenient for the breadwinner to do his or her thing. To minimize this part of the puzzle is selfish and foolish.

It is so important for each partner to know their own value in the relationship. It's nourishing to a relationship when each person feels he or she is an equal partner.

Remember that self worth comes from within and for the most part, it is a personal decision. You do not need thousands of dollars, a new gadget, a big mansion, or a great car in order to develop self worth – it is an internal thing. How you perceive your self is the primary criterion that dictates how you see treat yourself and how you are seen by others.

  1. Finish things that you have begun. Having a sense of accomplishment is very important in the process to improve self worth. You can try reading a book every once in a while or write a short story. Whatever it is that you choose to begin, make sure that you do everything you can to finish it.
  2. Keep a journal or diary and write anything about your day's small victories. Documenting your little successes will give you a constant reminder that you can do something great on a regular basis. Do not hesitate to look back if you need an extra push or you are losing grip in your struggle to improve self worth.
  3. Break the habit of talking about other people's lives. It will not help you at all. Who wants to be the talk of the town in the negative sense? For sure, you do not want to be the topic of gossips. Do yourself a favor by not engaging in such petty activities.
  4. Make an effort to look great every day. Your physical appearance can do wonders in your endeavor to improve self worth. As much as possible, look smart and respectable. Decorum is not only dictated by what you wear – make sure that the right attitude goes with it.
  5. Learn to forgive yourself and other people. As we all know, nobody is perfect. Therefore, we should make our mistakes our take off point towards success. It is not right to dwell on a mistake for a long time – it will not correct the wrong things we have done.
  6. Do not mind the bad things that other people might be saying about you. It is their opinion and you do not have to react to everything they say because it will give them a sense of importance. Instead, show them that you are better than they think.
  7. Remember that no task is too big or too small for as long as you put your heart into it. To improve self worth, you should learn to take on any challenge, no matter how difficult it may seem. With the right attitude, nothing is impossible.

With these seven simple steps, you know that you will not go wrong. Simple as these steps may seem, you can definitely derive something that will contribute to your efforts to improve self worth. Monitor your daily progress and always feel good about yourself.
